The LEOMEL Society for care of the dying and the destitute was established on 6th August 2004 to care, support and look after the residents of Karunalaya by Mrs. Anita Rodricks, the founder member. It was registered as a non-profit society with the Karnataka Registrar of Societies (Reg. No. 373/04-05) on 25th September 2004. It was established in loving memory of Mrs. Anita Rodricks’ mother, Leopoldina Gomes, and her husband, Melwin Rodricks, at the village of Navage on the outskirts of the city of Belgaum, to assist and oversee the smooth running of Karunalaya.
